چکیده

Reverse flow is undesirable in liquid crystal devices with vertical alignment. The influence of the material properties on the onset of backflow is investigated for commercially available negative dielectric liquid crystals. It is shown that the threshold voltage VBF for the occurrence of backflow is an important material characteristic. This threshold is relevant for applications and a large value is desired in devices to avoid backflow while keeping a wide applicable voltage range. Accurate finite element simulation of the liquid crystal hydrodynamics allows extraction of VBF and the unknown Miesowicz coefficients ij. The resulting values are tabulated at 20.0 °C. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3242018

Homeotropic alignment of nematic liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy

We report here uniform and defect-free homeotropic alignment of nematic liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy (Deo0) on cleaned substrates, which can be changed to bright state (homogeneous alignment) by applying an electric field. However, non-uniformity in the bright state would not be desirable for display devices. Therefore, silane treated and gently rubbed substrates have be...

Flow-driven transition and associated velocity profiles in a nematic liquid-crystal cell.

The alignment properties and distribution of flow speed during Poiseuille flow through a microchannel of a nematic liquid crystal in a cell with homeotropic surface alignment has been measured using a combination of conoscopy, fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy, and time-lapse imaging. Two topologically distinct director profiles, with associated fluid velocity fields, are found to exi...

Effect of Surface Alignment Layers on the Configurational Transitions in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

To understand the mechanism behind the pitch change during the transient planar to the planar state transition of a cholesteric liquid crystal ͑while it is relaxing from the homeotropic state to the planar state͒, we studied a more controlled situation of pitch change in a thermochromic liquid crystal. We studied the pitch change in the liquid crystal, as a function of temperature, under various ...

Investigation of the liquid crystal alignment layer: effect on electrical properties.

We investigate the electrical behavior of a symmetric liquid crystal (LC) cell: elecrode-silane-LC-silane-electrode. The silane (chlorodimethyloctadecyl-silane) layer induces a homeotropic orientation of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) molecules. The wettability technique is used to detect the change of the surface energy of the electrode upon cleaning and silane layer deposition. We report on...

Homeotropic alignment of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals using noncovalent interactions.

We report on the homeotropic alignment of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs). Homeotropic anchoring of LCLCs is difficult to achieve, and this challenge has limited development of applications for LCLCs. In this work, homeotropic alignment is achieved using noncovalent interactions between the LCLC molecules and various alignment layers including graphene, parylene films, poly(methyl m...
